These Pearl Meatballs originated in China's Hunan/Hubei region, where they're considered a holiday or special occasion dish. They appear often at banquet dinners for Chinese New Year and birthdays. Of course, the name Pearl Meatballs comes from the fact that if you squint, they look like giant pearls. Ground pork is mixed with Chinese cooking wine, soy sauce, onion, ginger, and garlic to form meatballs, which are rolled in glutinous rice before being steamed.

To get started with this recipe, we must first prepare a few ingredients. You can have steamed chinese pearl meatballs using 15 ingredients and 8 steps. Here is how you can achieve that.

The ingredients needed to make Steamed Chinese Pearl Meatballs:
  1. Take 400 grams Ground pork
  2. Prepare 1/2 Bamboo shoot (boiled)
  3. Prepare 1/2 piece Ginger
  4. Prepare 1 Egg white
  5. Get 1 tbsp Shaoxing wine※ or sake
  6. Prepare 1 tbsp Chicken stock granules
  7. Get 1 dash Salt and pepper
  8. Make ready 1 tbsp Sugar
  9. Prepare 350 grams Mochi sticky rice
  10. Get 1 clove Garlic
  11. Take 1 dash Green onions or scallions
  12. Prepare 2 tbsp ★Black vinegar
  13. Get 2 tbsp ★Soy sauce
  14. Get 1 tsp ★Sesame oil
  15. Prepare 1 tsp Doubanjiang (or ra-yu)

Pearl meatballs originate from Hubei, China. Some people think this dish is a Cantonese dish and some people think this is a Hunanese dish however the correct origin of this dish will be Hubei. One of the most popular stories behind this dish is the founder of the state of Dahan (大漢), Chen Youliang. Chinese Pearl Meatballs are actually steamed pork balls covered with glutinous rice (sticky rice).

Steps to make Steamed Chinese Pearl Meatballs:
  1. Finely chop the bamboo shoot and ginger.
  2. In a bowl, evenly combine the ingredients from Step 1 with the ground pork, egg white, Shaoxing wine, chicken stock granules, salt, pepper, and sugar.
  3. Form the mixture from Step 2 into balls.
  4. Rinse the mochi sticky rice and soak it in water for 30 minutes, then drain. Coat the balls from Step 3 evenly in the soaked rice.
  5. Put the rice-coated balls from Step 4 in a steamer and steam them for 30 minutes over high heat.
  6. Chop the green onions. Roughly chop the garlic.
  7. Combine the ★ ingredients with the chopped onions and garlic from Step 6 to make the sauce.
  8. Arrange on plate and serve.
